I am a freelance photographer and writer currently based in the North East of Scotland.
After being at the leading edge of the digital transformation and involved in the creation of the 9th fully digital photographic studio in the UK back in 1995, I went on lecture in digital imaging at colleges and university before being offered the exciting move to Canary Wharf and the chance to work on the Independent, the Daily Mirror and the Sunday People, in an editorial support and training role.
With the technical background developed I then sort to return to my creative side working as a freelance designer and ad production manager with magazines such as Land Rover Monthly, whilst honing my writing skills with freelance features for several national magazines including Practical Caravan and Caravan Monthly.
In 2003 I became the Assistant Editor of MQR in Nottingham and also worked on Natural Stone Specialist before moving to Scotland in September 2004.
After taking some time out to pursue my photography again, including holding my own exhibition of landscape photography, I set up Jan Crane Photography in September of 2007 which has also developed a sister business - Jan Crane PHOTOgraphic - the commercial arm aimed at B2B services in photography, design and print.
Keeping my hand in the press, I worked part time for the local newspaper ad department for 12 months ending February 2008. I now concentrate on my career as a freelance photographer, writer and designer together with building my modern contemporary wedding/civil partnership photographic business.
I am able to offer a combination of services that are normally hard to find in one place – everything from concept to publication, including the photography and the copywriting as well as the actual design production is available as a service from Jan Crane Photography and Jan Crane PhotoGRAPHIC.
I am passionate about my photography but I often enjoy putting the camera down and taking up the pen (or keyboard) and write on a number of subjects from travel and wildlife to socio-political subjects and care enormously for the way our senior citizens are treated, and often mis-treated, in care and by society as a whole.
This is born from watching my own parents suffer at the hand of the system that they had bought into and paid taxes into all their lives. You will find the appauling story of the way my father was treated in his final months along with subsequent articles relating to aspects of elderly care that I, personally, find so appauling that I truly hope (in the words of the song) I die before I get old.
I hope you enjoy reading, and are possibly occassionally disturbed by, the work in my blog. If you wish to view some examples of my photography please visit www.jancranephotography.com.
Warmest wishes to everyone who has made it so far. JAN
